Photorejuvenation (tired skin, loss of radiance, uneven colour)
IPL (intense pulsed light) CPL (calibrated pulsed light) systems
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a process that filters light from several different parts of the spectrum to provide skin photorejuvenation, targeting and visibly improving problems such as sun damage, sun spots, rosacea and spider veins.
Calibrated Pulsed Light, CPL, is the next generation of skin rejuvenation with the latest IPL technology, using light to treat a variety of skin problems. A non-invasive powerful wavelength is pulsed into the skin, which stimulates some of the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in healthier, smoother skin. These wavelengths are delivered to the skin at sensational speeds to ensure effectiveness.
The Xlase Plus Calibrated Pulsed Light (CPL) applicator offers several innovative and advanced technological enhancements. Compared to other IPL systems on the market, the CPL system has proven to be one of the most powerful and effective. It is simple and efficient to use.
CPL rejuvenation (or combined with volumetry) results in improved skin tone and a reduction in the depth and number of wrinkles. CPL causes selective thermal damage to the structures of the papillary and reticular layers of the dermis to stimulate fibroblast activity and the synthesis of new collagen fibres.
CPL can help with the following skin conditions:
- Hyperpigmentation
- Rosacea
- Sun spots/ liver spots
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven/textured skin
- Pigmentation
- Large pores
- Increases collagen
Active inflammations and infections such as herpes or purulent acne.
Inflammatory skin conditions or eczema in an active phase.
Pregnancy and lactation due to lack of studies confirming safety.
Taking photosensitising medication that may react with laser radiation.
Autoimmune diseases, including lupus erythematosus and scleroderma.
History of keloid scar formation, which may worsen after treatment.
Skin tumours or suspected skin tumours.
Fresh tanning or planned intensive tanning.
Use of retinoid therapy, which may sensitise the skin to light.
During the consultation, a specialist will assess your skin condition and decide whether the treatment is safe. If contraindications to photorejuvenation are identified, the specialist may recommend alternative rejuvenation treatments that will produce similar results.
We recommend that clients avoid sunbathing and excessive sun exposure for 6 weeks prior to their CPL treatment. We also advise clients to avoid any treatments that may irritate the skin for 1-2 weeks prior to treatment, including waxing.
Most people tolerate the CPL treatment . After the treatment, the skin may be red, irritated and swollen. Pigmented skin may become darker before it peels off. Full results may appear 4-6 weeks after completing a series of CPL treatments.
Darker brown spots – brown spots and freckles may appear darker as they heal after CPL treatment, especially after the first treatment in a series. Do not attempt to remove these discoloured areas. Allow them to exfoliate naturally.
Redness and swelling – the skin may be swollen and red after treatment. The erythema (redness) and swelling (puffiness) of the treated area usually subsides within a few hours, but may persist for up to seven days or longer. It is usually most noticeable immediately after treatment and on the morning of treatment. Cold compresses (5 minutes and 10 minutes) should be applied several times a day to relieve redness and swelling. You may experience irritation, itching and/or mild burning or sunburn-like pain within 48 hours of treatment.
Blister and scab care – if scabs or burns occur, apply a thin layer of an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment 2-3 times a day for 3 days. Please call us if you experience burns or scabs.
Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation (darkening or lightening of skin colour) may occur. Please call us if this reaction occurs.
What to avoid after CPL / IPL treatment?
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, alcohol, intense exercise and activities that may cause redness for 2 days after treatment.
Avoid heat, any kind of direct heat, sunbathing, saunas and any steam generating equipment.
Care should be taken when cooking, frying and baking.
Skin care after CPL / IPL treatment
Skin may be sensitive to temperature for a few days after treatment. Gentle cleansers and moisturisers should be used. Topical products such as retinols and glycolic acid products should be avoided for at least one week after treatment.
Sun – avoid direct sunlight on the treated area and use a broad spectrum UVA / UVB sunscreen SPF 30 or higher for 4-6 weeks after treatment.
